My brother arrived in Baton Rouge this morning in time for the first ICU visiting session. To his surprise, Dad was awake and eating breakfast. He's coherent, but still disoriented. Apparently he remembers the fall, but doesn't remember his friend Art coming over and taking him to the emergency room. He clearly recalls being restrained which pissed him off to no end. Of course, he's still itching to go home. But then he becomes more subdued and seems to understand why he needs to stay in the hospital. Although he doesn't get why he's in the ICU instead of a regular room. My brother tried to explain the low sodium issue, but Dad doesn't seem to process that info. According to a male nurse, Dad keeps asking the same questions over and over (Why am in ICU? When can I go home? etc). His memory is still quite muddled. Also, my brother saw the bruise on my Dad's right side. It goes up most of the side of his body and is BLACK. Dad was complaining about pain in his shoulder. Not sure how many pain meds he's on now, but I would guess a lot. Right now Dad will be in ICU at least one more night, and now that his sodium levels are back to normal, they're hoping to move him into a regular room soon (cross your fingers!) Dad knows mom and I are coming up tomorrow. My brother is planning to head out after we arrive (early afternoon). But I assume he'll come back to Baton Rouge when he's able. In the meantime, I reserved a space at the nearby kennel for the dogs (will drop them off at 7 am), and ran them over to my old vet to get them kennel cough shots (all their other shots are up to date). Mom and I are going to run a few quick errands (gas, trip supplies), finish packing and tie up loose ends around here. With any luck, we'll be able to relax early this evening, maybe watch a movie (Eight Below from Netflix that I'd like to get in the mail before we leave), get to sleep early and head out for Baton Rouge around 8 (as soon as I get back from dropping off the dogs). I have no idea how long we'll be gone (at least till the end of the week, I'd assume), and since my Dad doesn't have a landline at his house, I have no idea where I'm going to find a dial-up connection for my laptop (so if you don't hear from me for awhile, you'll know why). But I'll bring it anyway, just in case. I feel so much better now that my brother has seen my Dad and that he's there with him. Things are holding stable at the moment, so I'm hoping for the best. I gotta jet. Will post again tonight if I have time. And thanks to everyone for all their kind thoughts and wishes. You guys are the BEST!!
