Various Tidbits

Per the morning news, violent crimes in Houston are down this year from 2006. The newscaster then made the comment that some people believe it could be attributed to the weather this winter being "cold and gloomy." Yes, that must be the reason.

"I was in the mood to smash someone's skull in, but the weather was too icky."

Right.

I can sorta see why burglaries would be affected by the weather, but murders and aggravated assaults? I don't buy it.

Also per the news, Anna Nicole's body is heading from a Florida morgue to the Bahamas. They have aerial footage of the caravan. Jesus. She's going to be buried "in a custom gown and a tiara." You have got to be kidding me. A tiara? To symbolize her being the Princess of Methadone?

Anyhoo, I'm up with the birdies (actually, before the birdies) since I went to sleep yesterday at 3 pm. I'd only planned to take a long nap, but I was so tired I kept sleeping. I really needed it. First good rest I've gotten since returning from Baton Rouge.

Speaking of which, not much news on Dad since we left. We've only talked to him a few times. Apparently his urologist put him on a (portable) catheter for a week since his bladder was so full the measurement was "off the charts." NICE. And no, I don't enjoy writing about my dad's bladder anymore than you like reading about it, so let's change the topic, shall we?

Oh, I totally forgot to mention that while we were in Baton Rouge, mom and I spent hours upon hours organizing two of dad's spare rooms. One was filled with heavy boxes, stacked all willy-nilly, from when he'd moved in 3 years ago. You could barely get in the room. We started on that room early Saturday morning while dad was still sleeping. We weren't sure what his reaction would be, since he gets very senstive about anyone touching "his stuff."

Most of it was old car magazines (some going back to the 60's), model train shit (a former hobby of his), books and business stuff from the 80's and 90's. I was delighted to run across a box of my paperbacks (that had been put in storage when my parents moved houses in 1992), and...oh my goodness...Fisher-Price toys! I loaded all that up in the car before we left.

Anyhoo, after nearly two days of working, we managed to get the two rooms looking quite spiffy (considering how they used to look). To our relief, Dad was extremely pleased. Didn't fuss at us at all for touching his stuff. I took some photos, which I'm sure will thrill you to no end. Will post them if I ever get around to it.

Even though it's rather minor in the scheme of things, getting his house in ship shape condition was a big load off our minds (you should've seen all the work mom did in the master bath and kitchen to boot!). Since we can't control what he does, being able to clean and organize his surroundings was the best we could do and gave us a feeling of control.

And if we have to sell that house down the line, it'll make things easier. Dad would like mom to move there eventually, but mom wants to keep the house in Houston. That'll be a future shitfest. And dad would like to see me move back down here. Of course he would.

As a matter of fact, a lot of people have assumed I'd move back to Houston since I left my horse farm job in Kentucky. While that grand dream didn't work out as I'd hoped, I still love the Lexington area, and plan to stay awhile. When I move again, it'll probably be to the New England area...although I still would like to check out North Carolina.

But I tell ya, I sure haven't minded these balmy days down south, with temps in the 70's. It's been a nice preview of spring and early summer.

Oh! I just remembered -- I called my apartment complex yesterday to check on things and let them know I mailed my rent and would be gone another week. I wound up talking to the gal who works in the office who lives next door to me. She said she tried to email me. Uh-oh.

Turns out, my back patio door was wide open (same thing that happened last time I was in Baton Rouge!) and they went in to shut it. I don't know how long it'd been open, but based on my electricity bill balance ($137 -- which set off some alarm bells), probably for quite awhile. I guess she'd been out of town for a week and noticed it on Monday when she returned. She initially thought I was back home, but when she noticed the door was still open Tuesday and my car was gone, she alerted maintenance. Nothing appeared to be out of place or damaged, so that's good. Even though I double-checked I shut that door TIGHT and locked it, I realize now I should've shoved the couch up against it before I left, just in case. Now I know better for the next time I go out of town.

Oddly, that door has never flung open while I've been at work (and I hardly ever lock it), so I don't know what the deal is. Bastard rebel door. Grrrrr.

Alright, kookballs. I'm off to get some breakfast (will it be toast, or apple turnovers? hmmmm...) and go back to sleep for a bit. My schedule's all wonked up, as it were.

More later, from your Queen of Excitement. *placing tiara on head*
