This Much Determination in College Might've Been a Good Idea

I finished my first scarf last night! 66 inches of pain, sweat and laughter (mom and I listened to Kathleen Madigan's comedy album "In Other Words" on Rhapsody last night. What a way to knit!)

I still need to block the sucker and find out if that will uncurl the sides for me, but if not, that's ok. I planned to tuck it away as a memento and never wear it. But that doesn't mean the doggies will be spared modeling duties first.

For some bizarre reason, I decided to start a new project immediately. It was nearly midnight, why not? I'd taken a long nap from 2 till 7, so I wasn't that tired. This time, I choose bigger needles (11) in bamboo and a fat yarn in hunter green.

What a bitch to knit. The yarn tends to split, so my stiches are tighter than they should be. I have to wear a leather thimble on my right index finger to push the left needle through. On the upside, progess is much faster by using such fat yarn/big needles, albeit more tedious.

Mom fell asleep shortly after I started my new scarf (knit 2, purl 2 for a ribbed effect) and once I got going, I didn't want to stop. I switched from Diet Coke to coffee about 2 am. Mom woke up around 5:30 (she sleeps on the sofa down here), looked over and saw me sitting at the kitchen table.

"Hi!" I waved.

"I KNEW you'd still be up. Oh my goodness...how far have you gotten?" she asked. "Wait! Lemme get some ice water and sit down first."

Once she settled down at the kitchen table with me, I showed her my progress.

Fifteen inches so far! She was impressed. She thinks it's boootiful. Me too. I made a few slight boo boos here and there, but with the textured effect, it's hard to spot.

I stayed up another hour or so, until I was nauseous from too much coffee/lack of sleep. I got a few more rows finished upstairs before taking a relaxing hot shower (I knew I wouldn't be able to fall asleep right away). It was after 7:30 by the time I nodded off.

SweetPea decided 11:30 would be a fantastic time to start barking to indicate "I need to relieve myself in the green grass of the outside world. Mother, arise!"

My response: "Noooooooooo. You've got to be kidding me."

Sweets: "Oh mother. I never jest about such things."

I rolled out of bed and stumbled around trying to find my pants. I was still remembering my dream. Something about meeting Ted McGinley ("Revenge of the Nerds," "Married with Children") and asking him about his acting experiences. I also mentioned I used to have a huge crush on him. Then he morphed into Woody Harrelson who got exasperated with all my questions. Go smoke some hemp and chill, dude. Geez.

Splashed some cold water on my face, and bumbled downstairs with the waggy bottom twins.

For some reason, I decided to stay up. Two Diet Cokes and a couple rows later (my hands are sore), I'm ready to head back to bed before I get nauseous again. My scarf is now over 17"! I can't wait to get this one finished and go back to thinner needles and yarn.

Later today I need to work on editing a press release for the horse rescue charity, and perhaps mom and I will finally watch "Eight Below."

Or I might have to search out more comedy albums on Rhapsody. Any suggestions? (I don't think Dane Cook is up mom's alley, so don't bother mentioning that one! I played some clips of him for Dad while he was here, and the phrases "Karen is a douchebag!" and "Are you outta your fuckin' mind?" over and over set him on edge. And he's not the one who's sensitive to cussing).

Off I go, little ones. Have a great Sunday!
