I didn't want to read this story when I saw the headline on Crime Library, but I was compelled. The title in itself is horrific, so prepare yourself: Crystal Brown Finds Murdered Pet in a Gift-Wrapped Box To make matters more heartbreaking, Crystal is only 17 years old, and Chevy was her special needs service dog, as well as her best friend. I certainly don't blame you if you skip over reading the story -- who needs those kinda details rattling around in their head? And I wouldn't even have brought it up, except...there's something we can do to help. The Humane Society of the United States has started a "Justice for Chevy" fund. The reward for finding, arresting and convicting the cruel monster who did this was originally $2,500 but quickly jumped to $10,000 when word spread and donations came pouring in. You can also donate towards other animal cruelty cases. Another way you can help is to send a letter of condolence to Crystal. I was thinking of sending her a nice card, and a photo of my first dog, Cinnamon. Because if I know Cinnamon, he would've been the first one to welcome Chevy to doggy heaven. At least that's what I like to think. I might send a photo of Buddy and SweetPea too, and tell her how much joy they've brought to my life. Of course, you can never replace a beloved pet, but it's so surprising and wonderful to find out how much your heart expands to make room for new furry friends. If you'd like to send a note to Crystal, the address is: Crystal Brown Per the HSUS article, Crystal has a new puppy. Another Australian shepherd named Diesel. "Hopefully," she told reporters, "he'll be my best friend." I'm certain he will.
