Hey girl! Ok, we just built a desktop for about $1200...no software, we loaded our copy of XP. I don't know what you need exactly, but all the pieces come with diagrams to hook it all up. We got a tower, a 400gig HD, an Intel motherboard and processor, 600w powersupply, a video card(Nvidia), and a DVD drive. And it took the hubby a few hours to assemble. So, there is some reference for you...and if I get a chance to check out Second Life, I'll let you know how the system we have works. Oh, and he got all of this either from eBay, or New Egg.

Maybe check Craigslist for a new computer? OR OR OR wait until after graduatin' season starts for that, because people buy their kids laptops for college. Someone might be lookin' to unload a sweet desktop. Or someone might have gotten sucked into getting a new system because they wanted Fista THAT MUCH, and now they don't know what to do with their XP system. It could happen. My husband built his own computer with pieces he bought piecemeal over the course of, sheesh, a year or more. He runs Win2k on it because he doesn't even trust XP. I met a guy tonight who just put Vista on his laptop, and he showed it to me. He was trying to make it sound like he thinks it's cool, but then he let on that it took 10 hours to install and upgrading from XP to Vista meant RECONFIGURING HIS HARD DRIVE (there wasn't enough warning about this; he's terribly lucky that he regularly backs his shit up). Then that thing in the sidebar that makes your windows do that 3-D turning thing crashed his system every time he tried to use it. Mhm, I'm not jumping on that wagon anytime soon.
